Mineral Specimen Collecting: Silver and Gold |
For the last 20 years, the author has been visiting mines, mineral fairs,
and mineral dealers to purchase and self collect minerals from over 40 countries
to date.
One of his guiding inspirations was Peter Bancroft's excellent book Gem
and Crystal Treasures which describes Bancroft's selection of the 100
localities for the worlds best mineral specimens.
This essay will describe some of the background and history of famous localities,
and the minerals found there.

Hardness, color and clarity scales |
The Mohs scale measures the hardness or durability of minerals and natural gemstones. Hardness refers to the gemstone’s ability to resist abrasion. In other words, it describes the stone’s capacity to resist scratches from other minerals. If you were to take a diamond (has the highest score) and try to scratch its surface with a ruby (the next highest score), you would be unsuccessful. However, if you were to take the diamond and scratch the surface of a ruby, it would cause a scratch in the ruby stone.Sunday, July 26, 2020 |

5 Record Breaking Gemstones Even Billionaires Can’t Buy |
As Elizabeth Taylor once said: “I adore wearing gems, but not because they are mine. You can't possess radiance, you can only admire it.”
It’s a good philosophy, because when it comes to the world’s biggest, rarest and most extraordinary gemstone discoveries, no one—not even billionaire President Donald Trump—could afford the possession.
We’re not talking about the average diamond engagement ring that sets you back $4,000 and was probably grown in a lab. And we’re not talking about the $3,000 ruThursday, February 22, 2018 |

Backing Out |
News reports this week indicated that the Bank of Nova Scotia (ScotiaBank), Canada’s third largest bank, had put its precious metals operation, ScotiaMocatta, up for sale. Various sources said the unit had been for sale for a year or so and it was thought or hoped that Chinese interests might buy the business. It was also reported that the Bank of Nova Scotia would shrink the unit if no buyer could be found. The impetus for the sale was said to be a scandal involving smuggled gold from South AmeTuesday, October 24, 2017 |

A pair of articles on the Wall Street Journal ponders an event I long expected would happen: willingness to eat at fast food places whose is steeply priced and of dubious quality.
Please consider Going Out for Lunch Is a Dying Tradition.

Stocks and Gold; the Next Opportunity |
By Gary TanashianUnless you visit the Notes From the Rabbit Hole website regularly, you might think the title of this article implies it is written by a market analyst pretending to know what will happen; like a top in the stock market or a resumed bull cycle in gold. You might also think it is written by one of the writers who’ve either a) been fighting the stock bull since the bearish market terminated a year ago or b) been a perma gold bug bull.So once again, we have our disclaimers because Friday, February 17, 2017 |

There have been a wide array of reports suggesting that the U.S. government is preparing military and Homeland Security assets for widespread election fall out. Given the mainstream media’s inclination towards Hillary Clinton and recently presented evidence that Democrat operatives have been attempting to illegally influence the ballot box through falsifying votes and electronic tampering, it appears that concerns surrounding a rigged election are not necessarily unfounded, as President Obama woFriday, November 4, 2016 |

Sizing Up the Endgame |
Support this blog by visiting Jim’s Patreon Page!
All Hillary had to do last week was show up and stand at a podium for ninety minutes without swooning while Donald Trump barked and grunted his way through the half-assed press conference we like to call a “debate.” It was all I could do to keep watching the nauseating spectacle. It made you want to reach out and whap your TV upside its head, or maybe just shoot the fucker, like Elvis used to do.

The 10 Worst US Presidents – Chuck Baldwin |
This is not a political blog, but since policy and economics are inextricably linked, and this column states many facts that are conveniently omitted by the history books, here goes nothing. Note that Chuck Baldwin shows no inclination to political parties – a refreshing approach in today’s ‘my clown is better than your clown’ political mentality.
A few days ago, I posted my list of the top ten worst U.S. presidents on my Facebook page. See (and hopefully “Like”) my Facebook paSunday, September 4, 2016 |

Ignore Yellen and Buy the Dip in Precious Metals |
Investors worldwide have been on pins and needles in eager anticipation of a speech from our economic overlords. Friday morning FED chair Yellen finally opened her mouth and said a whole lot of nothing.Markets didn’t know exactly how to react to her nothingness. Stocks were up and then down. Gold was down and then up. The USD index plunged and then rallied nearly 1%. Will the FED raise rates in 2016 or not? The drama continues as Yellen of Oz pulls the levers behind the curtain. But the central bSaturday, August 27, 2016 |
