Last week, for the first time since the 1979 Iranian revolution, the US president spoke with his Iranian counterpart. Their 15 minute telephone call was reported to open the door to further high-level discussions. This is a very important event.

I have been saying for years that we should just talk to the Iranians. After all, we talked to the Soviets when they actually had thousands of nuclear missiles pointed at us! The Iranians have none, according to our own intelligence services. I even suggested a few years ago that we should "offer friendship" to them. Unfortunately, so many so-called experts have a stake in keeping tensions high and pushing us to war. They did not want to hear what I was saying. It seems, though, this is beginning to change now with these recent events.

The phone call was one of the most important moves away from war and conflict in a long time. Taken with the Obama administration's decision to hold off on bombing Syria, we should be encouraged.

It is also probably a good sign that this phone call has infuriated the neoconservatives at home, the pro-war faction in Israel, and the hard-liners in Iran. Now that a process of negotiation has begun, the chance of war has been significantly reduced. The US is very unlikely to bomb Iran while it is talking with them, and Israel is also unlikely to start a war while the US is at the negotiating table with the Iranian leadership.

But we should also remain very cautious. Obama's war on Syria was only stopped because the American people finally stood up and said "enough." The message was received loud and clear and it shocked the neocons pushing war. They were used to being in charge of foreign policy.

In a recent CNN poll, more than 75% of Americans favored negotiations with Iran. This is very good news, but those pushing for war will not give up that easily. Believe it or not, some Members of Congress have recently introduced legislation to authorize war on Iran - even as these first steps toward a peaceful resolution of our differences begin to bear fruit!

So no, they will not give up that easily. There are many in the president's own Cabinet who do not want to see US/Iranian relations improve. Even the president himself seems unable to avoid provocative statements -- such as his claim that the Iranians are only willing to talk because the sanctions have been so successful in bringing them to the table. That is a false and unnecessary boast, and if he continues in such a way he will destroy what progress has been made.

But we are in the majority now. There are more than three-quarters of us who do not want war on Iran. It is essential that we keep the pressure on the Administration to ignore the war demands in both political parties and among the so-called foreign policy experts. There will be much more war propaganda coming our way as the warmongers get more desperate. Americans must see this propaganda for what it is. They should educate themselves and become familiar with alternative news sources to gain the tools to counter the propaganda. We do have a better chance at peace, but this is no time to let down our guard!

" Iran is a nation that has many times vowed complete destruction of Israel." So what, why does the USA have to protect this apartheid state? Israel has been wiping out the Palestinians for 65 yrs. and the whole world looks on. Why don't we arm those Palestinian freedom fighters?

We now have two countries that have legalized assassination, even assassination of its own citizens on its own soil, the US. But since the US and Israel are so close is it any wonder the two are mirroring each other?

Foreign policy has never been a strong point with Ron Paul. It's the height of naivety to believe Iran, by speaking with Obama, is doing anything for peace other than buying time to develop nuclear weapons. Iran is a nation that has many times vowed complete destruction of Israel. Paul compares Iran to the former Soviet Union which, in fact, feared destruction from the United States; Iran has no such comparative fear.

Equally strangely Ron Paul, who believes our nation is a Republic ruled by laws guaranteeing individual rights NOT dependent on majority concurrence -- now spouts a CNN poll where the majority favors some form of action. Polls ought not determine moral actions or inactions.

Paul end his article with this: "...this is no time to let down our guard."

....which is exactly what he's advocating.

All right, I'll bite. Who would you say has (in today's politicians, not some past hack) the "right" foreign policy and why you believe them to be correct. Surely not Obama!

I know you have your bias against Ron Paul but have you ever dropped that bias and properly assessed what he says? Is a well pummeled nation like Iran that has suffered for so many years the financial sanctions the thugs in DC have slammed them with really a threat to Israel never mind the US? Why would Iran not threaten to wipe out Israel or attack the US when these countries have for so many years screwed with the country. I can see where keeping the rhetoric going against Iran is worth the effort for the DC jackass's as another avenue to keep the people of the US fearing attack but there really is no substance to this poor excuse for a threat. Do they have some radical's in their midst, of course. Are they any worse than the radicals in DC that would attack anyone they don't like, of course not? Given past history which nation is the greatest war criminal?

Protecting the US from attack is a noble task but making things up just to justify spending trillions on military armament buildup, not to mention having all those bases in every country they now exist in, is not keeping the US safe. It's actually had the opposite effect, you can't argue this when there is so much out there, think news footage, that shows sovereign nations are sick and tired of having the US screwing with them. This has resulted in creating some real threats for the US. Jim C, have you really fallen for the liberal claptrap BS spewed by CNN and the like?

Ask yourself this, what is it that the US will benefit from if Iran is attacked? Is it really sovereign security or is it control over resources? Is it a show of power to Russia and China so these countries will simply roll over? Is it so that they can ultimately setup radar and missile bases (think Cuba) after they've bombed the crap out of and invaded the country and further exert terrorist control over more of the world? Heck, I'm sure if you were honest you would have many more options that can be tacked on to the short list I have here.

In reference to your last item, Ron Paul is by no means is advocating that the US should drop its guard. If you read, without biased eyes, all that he has said about the way the US is behaving as an international terrorist organization and creating the need for the huge military complex that now runs the country and instead brought the troops back home, took the savings and invested in infrastructure and so many other worthy projects within the country, then concentrated on keeping invaders out, the US would be well ahead of the game and still safe. How has the current scheme really kept the US safe? Small terrorist organizations run from caves have shown, that they can whenever they want, inflict damage within the US. It's laughable that with all the technological and military superiority the US has that these cave dwellers have shamed the DC jackass's.

Sorry Jim, your logic here is flawed. I won't try to promote Ron Paul as the individual who has all the answers and is the world’s savior but he is a wise man that people should pay more attention to.

My criticism of Ron Paul is by no means an endorsement of Obama: both are anti-Israel. Nor do I think Israel beyond accusations of human rights violations - but compared to Iranian Islamic Law Israel is a most benevolent nation.

My position on the Democratic and Republican parties is that they are, in essence, rival Socialist gangs - the Republicans really more deceitful giving but lip service to the original ideas of the Founding Fathers. The only hope I see is either from the Tea Party breaking away entirely from the Republicans as a new third party -- much as the Republicans separated from the Whigs, wishy washy over slavery, in the 1850s. Then there is the Libertarian alternative, around for decades, which might finally catch fire.

I was an original supported of Paul and the Libertarians in the 70s but now have issues with both. if Ted Cruz and Rand Paul could unite around a core platform we just might have a chance. But I can't help but think that even that event would not make a dent in the millions of voters now linked to entitlements for their daily existence.

Why does 2% of the US population get to control so much of our Foreign policy?
What makes you think the Iranians want to take over the world and force their law on the USA? IRAN HAS NOT INVADED ANY COUNTRY IN 250 YRS. But they are the threat? Why, because the same people who sold you the Iraq lies ,the Syrian lies, are selling you the Iranian lies?
When will you realize politicians have no control and they are there to serve the owners purpose. This country was bought for 16 plus trillion dollars and they want it deeper in debt and it will be deeper in debt thanks to those same politicians you keep believing in. We are the debt slaves to the owners not the politicians who sold us out.
They are employees and "we the people" are not their employers.

That show aint over yet bubba. Obama has shown he's a stubborn asshole who will break any law that gets in his way to get what he desires and he desires to start another war, maybe even two or three, before he gets kicked out of the White House. Make no mistake about it, Obama is the greatest war monger that's parked his ass in the presidents chair in the last 100 years. This is the change he was really selling during his campaigning.
