What makes gold good money |
People say that gold is rare this is why it makes good money. To make an analogy to the porridge in Goldilocks, the temperature could not be too cold or too hot. If gold were too common, or too rare, it would not work as money. Think of sand, which is too common, or blue diamonds which are too rare (and diamonds would not work as money anyway.
Rather than focusing on its rarity, let’s look at extracting it. It has generally held true that the cost to mine an ounce of gold was around one ounce ofSaturday, January 9, 2021 |

America's Forgotten War Against the Central Banks |
"Let me issue and control a nation's money supply, and I care not who makes
its laws." (Mayer Amschel Rothschild, Founder of Rothschild Banking Dynasty)
Many prominent Americans such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and
Andrew Jackson have argued and fought against the central banking polices used
throughout Europe.
A note issued by a central bank, such as the Federal Reserve Note, is bank
currency. These notes are given to the government in exchange for an interest-bearing

The Secret of Wealth Preservation - Jeff Nielson |
We have a failure to communicate. The vast
majority of the investment public in the Western world has no understanding –
at all – about how to preserve and protect their wealth. Of the minority of the
investment community with some understanding of wealth preservation, almost
invariably it is a flawed understanding.
Understanding wealth preservation begins
with having a detailed and correct understanding of
“money”.
Understanding money begins with correctly comprehending the difference betweWednesday, December 23, 2020 |

TSI’s Principles of Technical Analysis |
Although my primary focus is on the fundamentals, I do use Technical Analysis (TA). However, many of my TA-related beliefs deviate from the mainstream. Below is a collection of these beliefs presented in no particular order. The collection is not comprehensive, but it gives an overview of how I think historical price action can and can’t be used.

The Gold Standard Did not Cause the Great Depression |
Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics 19, no. 1 (Spring 2016): 101–111[The Midas Paradox: Financial Markets, Government Policy Shocks, and the Great Depression by Scott Sumner]The Midas Paradox is an impressive piece of scholarship, representing the magnum opus of economist Scott Sumner. What makes the book so unique is Sumner’s use of real-time financial data and press accounts in order to explain not just broad issues—such as, “What caused the Great Depression?”—but to offer commentary on thThursday, November 12, 2020 |

How much do you know about gold investing |
It’s easy to fall in love with gold. After all, the rich and famous have obsessed over it for millennia. During the past two decades, gold ownership has become much more widespread. No longer a sole preserve of the elite, every day and mum and dad investors have also taken a shine to the glittering yellow metal. Accessibility to gold through bullion bars and legal tender coins, certificates and exchange traded products makes buying and storing gold simple. Driving folk to take advantage is thisMonday, June 22, 2020 |

Why Wage Growth Is So Weak |
The yearly growth rate of average hourly earnings in production and non-supervisory employment in the private sector eased to 2.3% in June from 2.4% in May.Many experts are puzzled by the subdued increase in workers earnings. After all, it is held the US economy has been in an expansionary phase for quite some time now.

What should the gold/silver ratio be |
The price of gold is dominated by investment demand* to such an extent that nothing else matters as far as its price performance is concerned. Investment demand is also the most important driver of silver’s price trend, although in silver’s case industrial demand is also a factor to be reckoned with. In addition, changes in mine supply have some effect on the silver market, because unlike the situation in the gold market the annual supply of newly-mined silver is not trivial relative to the exisSunday, April 5, 2020 |

Gold Improves Investment, Pension and Central Bank Portfolio’s Risk-Adjusted Returns |
Hungary increases gold reserves 10 fold and central bank Governor sees gold as having “economic and national strategic importance”
– Central banks diversifying into gold in order to ensure the national foreign exchange reserves are “safer” and to “reduce risk”
– Gold allocation reduces volatility & enhances returns in investment & pension portfolios– As stocks sold off aggressively, gold & Google searches for ‘gold price’ rose significantly

Eat Gold |
Submitted by BullionStar.com
A popular phrase in segments of the mainstream financial media is that “You Can’t Eat Gold”. We don’t know who first uttered this comment, but it was more than likely a talking-head or Wall Street analyst on CNBC or Bloomberg.
The disparaging claim seems to be based on concluding that in a financial or monetary crisis, if you own gold, that “You Can’t Eat It”. And so, according to the logic of whoever came up with the phrase, this would make gold useless during a finMonday, August 13, 2018 |

Standing Ready to Lease Gold |
We will take another break from capital destruction, to treat a topic which has come up this week. On March 11, we said:
“…central bankers do not think about gold.
Granted, they once did. In the 1960’s, there was the now-infamous London Gold Pool to keep the price of gold at $35. This is endlessly cited as evidence of current central bank price suppression, without bothering to mention that until 1971 the official US policy was to maintain the dollar to gold exchange rate of $35 to the ounce. …

Bonds, Inflation And Amigos |
The Bonds segment of NFTRH 491 took a turn to tin foil territory to allow the letter writer to expose newer subscribers to his ideological views and thus, bias. #491 also got pretty talky on the precious metals as it did a thorough review of the sector’s status, with silver’s symmetry to 2016 a very key item. Hint: An ill-fated bounce like so many that have come after the 2016 top is not what we are looking for with the next rally, but it ain’t gonna be easy. Is the Economic Summer Coming |
Cycles, cycles everywhere. We’ve already discussed the current state of the U.S. business cycle, arguing that the expansion should last for a while, although it is more advanced than in Europe. However, business cycles aren’t the only creatures living in an economic zoo. They are simply the most popular within the modern macroeconomics. The post-war business cycles lasted, on average, almost 6 years. But economists distinguished also shorter cycles, called Kitchin inventory cycles, which are belSaturday, March 17, 2018 |

Gold Miners’ Q4’17 Fundamentals |
The
gold miners’ stocks remain deeply out of favor, trading at prices
seen when gold was half or even a quarter of current levels. So
many traders assume this small contrarian sector must be really
struggling fundamentally. But nothing could be farther from the
truth! The major gold miners’ recently-released Q4’17 results prove
they are thriving. Their languishing stock prices are the result of
irrational herd sentiment.

Super-Duper-Irrational Exuberance |
Think back to the halcyon days of the dot com boom. This was a time after Greenspan declared “irrational exuberance”. Long Term Capital Management collapsed in 1998, and Greenspan decided to risk propelling exuberance to a level beyond irrational. Super-duper-irrational exuberance?
Anyway, Greenspan cut interest rates a few times in late 1998. Technology companies were able to raise $5 million or more with just a sketch on a napkin (“serviette” for those outside the US). Companies at a “later stTuesday, March 13, 2018 |

Debt and Delusions – Part 2 |
This article was written for Miles Franklin by Gary Christenson. Part one is available here.
The problem with debt is the creditor expects to be repaid.
Sovereign debt will be “rolled over,” never extinguished, and repaid with new debt. We delude ourselves and pretend total debt will increase forever (it can’t). That explains global debt exceeding $230 trillion today and official U.S. government debt approaching $21 trillion, with unfunded liabilities adding another $100 – $200 trillion. There aSaturday, March 10, 2018 |
