Did these mining giants just confirm the next gold frontier -- Ecuador |
There was a breakthrough deal in the Tanzania gold sector late last week, with major miner Barrick agreeing to pay the government $300 million and surrender a 16-percent stake in operations in order to end an impasse that's halted production.
But experiences like that aren't going to encourage further investment in places like Tanzania, with news this week suggesting that the world's top gold miners are looking to a new spot for growth projects: Ecuador.

Barrick gives Tanzania stake in mines, $300 million to end dispute |
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania -- Barrick Gold will give Tanzania a 16 percent stake in three gold mines, a 50 percent share of revenue from those mines, and a one-off payment of $300 million to resolve a dispute that has hit its operations in the country, the two sides said.
The Canadian miner and the Tanzanian government have been in talks for months after the east African country banned the export of unprocessed minerals and enacted laws to raise state ownership of the nation's mines.

Tanzania's demands of mining industry don't bother Sinclair |
Tanzania's demand for a greater share of revenue from mining operations in the country is causing alarm throughout the industry but it doesn't bother Tanzanian Royalty Exploration Corp. and its executive chairman, James E. Sinclair.
In a statement last week Sinclair said: "The proposed changes appear to be an action to gain a fair share of the financial rewards for the people and nation of Tanzania while still providing incentives to the investors. The proposed legislation is not nationalizatioWednesday, July 12, 2017 |

The government just killed the mining sector in this critical gold nation |
The Philippines government said this week it is trying to repair its damaged mining sector, with officials stating they will review all policies implemented by former environment secretary Regina Lopez, who took a hard-line stance against operations around the country.
But as that mining nation swings to the better, another key metals country has gone the other way. With the government implementing a raft of policies that may well decimate the entire sector here: Tanzania.

Tanzania's firebrand leader takes on its largest gold miner |
"If they accept that they stole from us and seek forgiveness in front of God and the angels and all Tanzanians and enter into negotiations, we are ready to do business."
As conciliatory gestures go, that one by John Magufuli, Tanzania's president, to Acacia Mining, the country's largest foreign investor, could hardly have been more fork-tongued.
Nonetheless, two days later John Thornton, head of Barrick Gold, Acacia's largest shareholder, met Mr. Magufuli to start talks on ending a dispute thatFriday, June 16, 2017 |

Barrick Gold Corp, the world's largest gold producer, is weighing a sale of its majority stake in African unit Acacia Mining and has approached several South African miners, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The potential sale would be part of Barrick's broader strategy of selling non-core assets to reduce its debt load. The Toronto-based company offloaded stakes in several mines last year.
The talks are at an early stage and there is no assurance a deal will be done, the sourcesWednesday, July 27, 2016 |
