Brilliant Commences Exploration Program at Michikamau Ni-Cu-Co-PGE Project, Labrador; Drill Test Zone with Grab Samples Averaging 1.14% Ni
Vancouver, B.C. - Brilliant Mining Corp (BMC: TSXV)
("Brilliant" or the "Company") today announced field crews have been mobilized to commence the previously announced, $1 million 2007 exploration program at the Michikamau Property (See Brilliant Mining news release on May 7, 2007). This year's program will follow-up on the highly encouraging results from the 2006 program at the Michikamau Nickel-Copper-Cobalt-Platinum Group Elements (Ni-Cu-Co-PGE) Project. Brilliant Mining has a 100% interest in the Michikamau Project, which covers 488 km2
of highly prospective exploration ground in Central Labrador, Canada.
Key Point Summary: 2007 Program
- 1,500 m Diamond drilling planned for second week of July
- Drill test the Sword Far North surface discovery identified at the end of last season
- Focus on observed nickel enrichment zones within the Michikamau troctolitic intrusion
- 100 line km ground geophysics in late June
2006 Highlights
- Ni-Cu-Co sulphides intersected near surface in 10 out of 12 holes drilled
- Grab samples averaging 1.14% Ni, 0.67% Cu and 0.194% Co at Sword Far North
- Comparison of Nickel/Sulfur ratios reveals nickel enrichment
- Microprobe analysis identifies significant nickel enrichment textures in surface showing sample
- Land position increased from 116 km2 to 488 km2
Michikamau 2007 Planned Exploration Program
The 2007 exploration program, combining both ground geophysics and drilling, is currently underway. Field crews have been mobilized in preparation for a 100 line kilometre ground magnetic and electromagnetic geophysical program. The geophysical grid will be surveyed at 25-100 metre line spacings to establish and refine targets for a 1,500 metre Diamond drill program. The drilling component of the program has a planned start date in the second week of July. The 2007 program will focus on the Juno and Sword geophysical anomaly trends with special emphasis on expanding the observed nickel enrichment within the system as outlined by the 2006 Sword Far North surface discovery.
Michikamau 2006 Exploration Program Summary
The 'Sword Far North' nickel-copper-cobalt showing, discovered by a Brilliant field crew, during the 2006 drill program at Michikamau returned an average grade of 1.14% Ni and 0.194% Co with one sample grading 1.62% Cu from 5 grab samples (See press release dated Aug. 30, 2006). The nickel to sulphur ratios observed from the surface showing are interpreted as a separate and discrete population with an elevated nickel content compared to the sulphides intersected in the 2006 drill holes. The two observed Ni sulphide populations indicate that a complex nickel enrichment history exists within the Michikamau Property.
This model is supported by a micro-probe analysis on the Sword Far North sulphide sample that clearly shows the presence of pentlandite Ni sulphide. The samples exhibit pentlandite in exsolution as well as distinct grains, which is significant from a metallurgical point of view. In addition a higher concentration of chalcopyrite copper sulphide was observed in the surface sample versus selected sulphide samples from the drill holes (see details in Company press release dated May 7, 2007).
The 2006 drill program was comprised of 12 core holes (MK06-01 to MK06-11 and MK06-13) targeting 5 conductive zones. The 1,244 metre drill program successfully identified the presence of Ni-Cu-Co sulphide bearing units in close proximity to surface across a 4 km by 5 km area with 10 out of the 12 holes intersecting a sulphidic interval (see Brilliant website www.brilliantmining.com/projects/michikamau/
for details).
Michikamau Property
The Michikamau Property ("Property") covers 488.25km2 within the Michikamau layered gabbro-anorthosite (troctolite) intrusion. This intrusion is considered to be highly favourable for hosting Ni-Cu-Co-PGE mineralization and represents a conceptual and empirical exploration target for Voisey's Bay type mineralization. Twenty-seven (27) high to medium conductors have been identified on the Property, hosted in troctolite within the interpreted throat "feeder" zone. The Property is located close to existing infrastructure, including the Churchill Falls hydroelectric facility.
The project is supervised by Rob Carpenter, Ph.D., P.Geo., Director of Brilliant. Dr. Carpenter is the qualified person as defined in National Instrument 43-101.
