Chesapeake Energy has seen its stock price cut in half since early October, and traders are positioning for more potential declines.
optionMONSTER's Depth Charge tracking program detected the purchase of about 4,800 January 4.50 puts mostly for $0.53 on Thursday. This is new positioning, as open interest in the strike was a mere 13 contracts before the traders appeared.
Long puts lock in the price where a stock can be sold, so they make money to the downside. Investors use them to hedge long positions or to speculate on a drop. (See our Coaching section)
CHK rose 1.14 percent to $4.45 on Thursday but is down 43 percent in the last three months. The oil and natural-gas company's next quarterly results are estimated for Feb. 24.
