Evansville, Ind. Vectren Energy
Delivery (Vectren) electric customers who enroll in the utility's Summer
Cycler program can receive a total of $28 or more in bill credits for the
summer cooling season. Summer Cycler, a voluntary energy management
program that briefly cycles off select appliances in the home during
periods of peak electricity demand, will offer a $5 monthly credit for each
electric air conditioning unit or heat pump enrolled in the program and $2
for each electric water heater from June through September.
To enroll in this free program, call Vectren's Conservation Connection
at 1-866-240-8476 or visit http://www.vectren.com. The Vectren Summer
Cycler program is available to all its residential and commercial electric
service customers. However, customers must enroll an air conditioning unit
in the Summer Cycler program to be eligible to enroll an electric water
heater.
The Summer Cycler program is a simple way to save on your summer
electric bills without any inconvenience or added work, said Doug
Petitt, Vectren's vice president of marketing and conservation.
Considering many home and business owners now have two or more air
conditioners, these monthly bill credits can quickly add up.
Upon enrollment, Vectren will install a small, radio-controlled device
on the appliance(s) at no charge. Then, during times of peak load and if
needed, the device(s) will be activated to briefly cycle off these
appliances to conserve energy. There is no danger of damage to the
appliance(s). The cycling off period typically only occurs for a few
minutes at a time during several hours of a day on days of peak electric
demand, which usually occurs between noon and 5 p.m.
More than 30,000 of Vectren's 140,000 electric customers are currently
enrolled in Summer Cycler. This unique energy conservation program helps
the utility redirect up to 25 megawatts of power, if needed, to further
ensure reliability for all customers during periods of peak demand.
Furthermore, customers can take advantage of many free or low-cost energy
efficiency tips to further reduce summer electric bills. These include:
* Have your air conditioning unit cleaned and inspected annually to ensure
its operating efficiently.
* Regularly clean or replace your cooling system's filter according to
manufacturer's suggestions;
* Close blinds or currents during the day to keep the sun out;
* Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamp (CFL)
bulbs. CFL's last seven to 10 times longer and use one-fourth as much
electricity;
* Set your thermostat at the highest possible setting; 78 degrees is
recommended. Adjust the temperature even higher at times when you're away
from home; and
* Make sure vents and registers aren't blocked by furniture or curtains to
ensure proper air flow.
