PITTSBURGH (AP) _ United States Steel Corp. (X) on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $275 million.
On a per-share basis, the Pittsburgh-based company said it had net income of $1.83. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were $1.82 per share.
The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 89 cents per share.
The steel maker posted revenue of $4.07 billion in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Analysts expected $3.96 billion, according to Zacks.
For the year, the company reported net income of $102 million, or 69 cents per share, swinging to a profit in the period. Revenue was reported as $17.51 billion.
U.S. Steel shares have fallen 20 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has declined slightly more than 1 percent. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $21.27, a decline of 16 percent in the last 12 months.
