Developing countries may be able to trade with each other without the U.S. dollar but so many dollars are floating around the world and constituting so much of central bank reserves that there may be no getting away from the dollar standard without crashing the world financial system. I wouldn't go as far as saying there is "no escape" from the US dollar.
The world may be quite different by the time 2040 rolls around.
