As the chart shows, consumer sentiment has loosely tracked monthly gains in nonfarm payroll over the past four decades, with two exceptions: the last two years, and the period marked by the end of the 1980 recession and the beginning of the 1982 downturn.


While history never quite repeats itself, some might say that the disconnect between what some of the economic data has been telling us -- assuming, of course, that it is accurate -- and what many Americans have been saying about the health of the economy is a canary in the coal mine signaling a double-dip downturn.
