Being on the forefront of breakthroughs in technology has
always been a surefire way for investors to realize huge gains. Some massive
fortunes were made during the dotcom boom, for example.
Even after that initial euphoria came and went, investing in
companies that were set to take full advantage of new market opportunities
created by the internet such as Amazon, PayPal, or Ebay remained a recipe for
success in the years that followed.
Going back even farther in time to the 1970s, Apple (AAPL)
was just a small startup. Not many people foresaw the opportunity presented by
being an early investor. Some people even sold shares that, decades later,
would be worth a very large amount of money.
Apple Co-Founder Ronald Wayne
sold his 10% stake in Apple for $800 (about $3,600 in today’s dollar terms)
back in 1976. Today, with the market cap of apple in
the 800 – 900 billion USD range, those shares would be worth over $80
Billion.
Will 5G present opportunities like personal computers and
the internet did?
5G: What is it and Why Does Anyone Care?
5G stands for fifth-generation cellular wireless. Most devices today are on the 4G LTE network or fourth-generation.
4G can download data at a speed of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps), while 5G can download at a speed of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). In other words, 5G will be one hundred times faster than 4G. But 5G is not just about speed, as we will see shortly.
There are three aspects of 5G that differentiate it from
previous generations of cellular wireless tech. 5G comes with:
- Greater speed
- Lower latency
- Ability to connect more devices at once
So, with 5G, we will be able to move more data in a shorter amount of time, have faster response times and fewer delays, and be more connected than ever. Everything from video games to video streaming to smart devices and more will become faster and more efficient.
When is 5G Coming?
So, when can you expect 5G to be available?
According
to PCMag,
“while we’re getting a little bit of 5G right now, you should expect the big 5G applications to crop up around 2021 or 2022. Until then, things are going to be confusing as wireless carriers jockey for customers and mind share.”

In America, 5G is already being rolled out in select areas by
several providers. Over the next few years, the tech should become widely
available. Lifewire has put together a nice list of specific wireless providers
and their plans to enable
5G availability.
A Few 5G Technology Stocks That Will Profit in the Years Ahead
A long list of companies will profit from 5G. Any business involved
in the production, testing, maintenance, or distribution of components needed
for 5G technology stand to benefit. Here are a few related picks.
Qualcomm (QCOM)
Qualcomm is inventing the technologies of an intelligently connected future, spearheading research efforts for the next global wireless standard, and collaborating with industry leaders to make this future a commercial reality. Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X55 is the world’s most advanced commercial multimode 5G modem that delivers breakthrough wireless performance. When 5G smartphones and mobile devices hit the market, among the semiconductor vendors to gain will be Qualcomm.
Skyworks Solutions (SWKS)
Skyworks Solutions manufactures semiconductors that are
essential to the functioning of small devices like smartphones, IOT devices,
smart home devices, and wearables.
Although the company is best known as supplying
semiconductor chips to Apple for their iPhones, Skyworks has begun selling to
other companies as well.
Nokia (NOK)
Nokia is a play on 5G telecommunication infrastructure. Nokia recently confirmed its position with 42 commercial 5G deals (more than any other vendor has announced) in place with operators around the world.
Nokia’s in house 5G mmWave Small Cells and AirScale BTS provide in-building and outdoor coverage, while Microwave Anyhaul, Cloud native RAN, antennas, and 5G cloud-native core are part of approximately half of their agreements to date.
Beyond the mobile networks portfolio, Nokia has excellent FP4 network processor-based IP routers and PSE- 3 chipset powered optical networking – and customers can use the Nokia Network Services Platform to make this into full-5G-strength software defined connectivity ‘smart network fabric’ secured by Nokia Security Orchestration, Analytics and Response.
5G Technology Will Soon be Upon us
Don’t miss this window of opportunity. There is still ample time left to invest in stocks that stand to profit from the implementation of 5G technology. Whether that involves testing and design, manufacturing of vital components, or anything else that will be a part of the 5G process, a lot of companies will see increased revenues as a result.
