Wallace- The “United Snakes government” has thrown down the gauntlet in
regard to the Bill of Rights, starting with (natch) the Second
Amendment.
Whether the cave-in crowd in the Republican caucus will stand up to this
Executive Branch power grab of one of our basic human rights remains to be
seen. But their recent record is not good.
What is it about guns that gets every liberal's knickers in a twist? I
love the feel of a fine Snap-On or Craftsman tool in my hand. Does that make
me a tool-crazy? Ditto a finely-built watch, fashioned for pocket or wrist?
Is there some sort of mental illness or OCD that goes along with that?
Because that's all a well-made gun is: a tool, an instrument, effective at
doing its job as a finely-made wrench is in doing its job. There is no
mystique or magic, except for the fact that the writers of the Constitution
held the right to bear arms in an esteem equal to that of free speech, free
assembly, freedom of religion, freedom from warrantless hassles from the
King's armed men.
It is not reassuring that in this (no longer credible) republic that you
need to survive a more severe background check to buy a sidearm than you do to
be a president or U.S. senator.
But it is reassuring that a few county sheriffs out west have put Barack
Obama and Eric Holder on notice that their rights-grabbing agenda will not
only not receive any help, but may face organized opposition. Sheriffs in two
Oregon counties have written the attorney general telling him exactly that.
The most recent, and useful, response has come from the Utah Sheriffs
Association, in a letter dated Jan. 19, to Obama, authored by Washington
County Sheriff Cory Pulsipher. It states, in relevant part:
“(I)t is imperative this (guns rights) discussion be had in Congress, not
silenced unilaterally by executive orders. As you deliberate, please remember
the founders of this great nation created the Constitution, and its accompanying
Bill of Rights, in an effort to protect citizens from all forms of tyrannical
subjugation.
“We respect the Office of the President of the United States of America.
But, make no mistake, as the duly-elected sheriffs of our respective
counties, we will enforce the rights guaranteed to our citizens by the
Constitution. No federal official will be permitted to descend upon our
constituents and take from them what the Bill of Rights - in particular
Amendment II - has given them. (Emphasis added.)
“We, like you, swore a solemn oath to protect and defend the Constitution
of the United States, and we are prepared to trade our lives for the
preservation of its traditional interpretation.”
Amen to that. Our own Sheriff Mitch Alexander has posted his position on the
matter on his Facebook page:
“This nation's government is a Representative Republic, not a democracy.
We are supposed to operate under the Rule of Law, not upon majority rule. The
Constitution of the United States of America clearly establishes the powers
of each branch of our government, and provides the necessary checks and
balances to prevent one branch or particularly one individual from
establishing themselves as king. I do not want or need a king. I want my
senators and legislators to be included in the traditional and constitutional
processes by which laws are passed. Although Executive Orders are a necessary
part of the Chief Executive's tool box, they should clearly be used on a
limited basis.
“No, this Sheriff will not be going door to door collecting your weapons!
The Second Amendment is a vital, necessary and existing component of the Bill
of Rights. I took an Oath of Office for the third time this past Monday. I
swore to ‘support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution
and laws of the State of Idaho.’ These documents both affirm the Second
Amendment, and so therefore, I have sworn to defend the Second Amendment.
Defend it I will!”
Amen to that. Idaho's own Constitution addresses the Obama-nation's
gun-grabbing agenda quite clearly:
“No law shall impose licensure, registration or special taxation on the
ownership or possession of firearms or ammunition. Nor shall any law permit
the confiscation of firearms, except those actually used in the commission of
a felony.”
No flies there. But more Western sheriffs need to speak up, as must their
legislatures. It's hard to resist the clarion call from Russia and China to
disarm ourselves. Remember, the Japanese declined to invade the continental
U.S. when they had the chance in the early 1940s because we were too heavily
and individually armed. Said Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto: “You cannot
invade the United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of
grass.”
That is something Obama, Holder and their turtle-suited minions should
keep in mind.
