Now that excitement over a trillion dollar coin solution to the nation’s fast approaching debt ceiling crisis seems to be fading, issuance of IOUs or government scrip appears to be next in line for consideration by policy makers in Washington as detailed in this CNN/Money report today.

My suggestion? Clamshells. It’s been done before as shown below from this item at the old blog.




Of course, the original publication of this photo taken at the American History Museum in Washington was prompted by the State of California issuing IOUs back in 2009 and this is all the more reason to think that the IOU solution has a much better chance than trillion dollar coins or 14th amendment shenanigans.

As for clam shells, this story at the New York Fed states rather emphatically that they really are money, so, they may get a serious look at the Treasury Department.
