Humans were nomadic hunter-gatherer-herders for 100,000's of years.

Correlation is NOT evidence of causation.

These cities pre-date automobiles. Land is and was scarce. The family business and living quarters are often in the same building.
The household is multi-generational. The list goes on and on.

If I must live close to the city, the suburbs are much more to my liking. The anecdotal evidence seems to support the notion that I am not alone.

Adding the little quip about these are the cities you or others like to visit on vacation is nonsense. Tourists don't go visit places identical to their home.
Otherwise they would stay home.

You stated absolutely nothing about the massive support system needed to keep the occupants of the city from eating one another.
They import everything and export mountains of refuse.

And finally, in a world-wide economic decline there exists no money to pursue "your" vision of ideal city design.
Admittedly no money exists to pursue mine either; large scale decentralization.
