The first year of any college 4-year degree is Liberal Arts. And by the time of graduation, almost 2 years has been spent in Liberal Arts type courses. To the best of recollection, Speech is about the only course where in the classroom experience is needed and this might be easily substituted by using video conferencing. For all the rest of the LA coursework, they could easily be done online at minimal cost.

Or get a cheap doctorate from the Open University of Sri Lanka.

It is all about the buck. And in the case of Academia, overly expensive credibility.

Think of the books and supplies one could buy for the total cost of 1 year of college and then self-study. For another year's worth, you could start a small business.

Didn't some smart guy state, "Diplomas are for people without talent."?
