>After spending $540 million, Anglo American dumps Pebble project in Alaska - Chris Powell - GATA
"... , but opponents fear it could adversely affect a way of life in the region. "

"Tim Bristol, director of Trout Unlimited's Alaska program, said in a statement that he couldn't think of a development project in the state's history that has faced such "wide and deep opposition" from Alaska's citizens."

Really?
I wanted to argue against you because it was ridiculous that this would alter the lifestyle in the region, however the argument I had prepared actually supports the above quotes. The Bristol Bay region has an enormous unemployed sector that depends heavily on entitlement programs. This is due to limited business opportunities and government jobs. Ergo the people are comfortable with AFDC, SNAP, native health programs, WIC, energy assistance, etc.
The Pebble Project threatens this lifestyle by creating many well paying jobs directly and indirectly. If the mine has a crew the size of Red Dog or Ft Know mines in Alaska, payroll could run $30-40 million a year. Then add support services for "a few dollars more". There will be local opposition. Lifestyles will be forced to change.
I can live with that.

You might wanna follow the money trail on the opposition side. You will find commercial fishermen out of Seattle and very upper-crust remote fishing lodge owners. The presumption that all the people of Bristol Bay are opposed is nonsense. Follow the money trail and see who is buying the advertising. Who appealed to the EPA before the permitting process even began? Follow the money trail.
