Bystander Effect is just a politically correct way of stating "herd instinct".

Then you are confused about people and the "moral high ground".
People, like all animals, act on the basis of "efficiency of effort": the least effort for the greatest gain.
Theft tends to involve far less effort than long-term work.

Then from our childhood we carry the veneration for the alpha.
Alpha says ... and betas enforce the gammas and deltas to comply.
Everyone is to be assimilated.
The gammas and deltas learn real quick to become invisible.
The old "cooperate and graduate" line.
You are part of the herd or you are food.

Never forget that debt makes slaves of one and all.
The wage slave can't afford to walk away from a job.
You status in the herd is based upon your capacity to carry debt. This capacity is demonstrated by the display of stuff.

If you haven't already noticed, the moral high ground is a lonely place to camp out.
The longer you stay, the more you become the outcast, the loner and yes, suspicious.
It also tends to be a bit shy on income potential.
