I'm not sure I agree with this statement. Looking at nature we see both sides of this coin.

On the one hand we have life and biology unfolding "from the finer to the gross" - microorganisms feed on raw materials, which are in turn consumed by larger organisms, right up the food chain to the complex predators and humans.

On the other hand we have the concepts of "decay" and entropy playing out in the non-biological sphere. The tendency for all things to eventually crumble into dust. Rock erodes to sand. Metals rust and corrode. Everything that is made is eventually unmade.

Indeed if we are to consider the "circle of life" then we find the exact opposite happens in death. Complex organisms decay, providing food for less complex organisms, right down to the microorganisms in soil that finally break it all back down to nitrates, phosphates and carbon again - where it all started.

I think both concepts are at play, among many others. Things are likely more complex than a simple "rule of thumb" like this.
