>A flea in his ear  - James Howard Kunstler -
I am beginning to understand this Kunstler, this chicken little of commentators: the world is ending, scamper to cover (with his book reverently tucked under one's arm of course). But why? What is the problem as he sees it? It goes deeper than the divergence from free Capitalism to Socialism, from the gold standard to fiat currency, from the subordination of the individual to the common good, much deeper. I suspect Kunstler thinks Man's error goes back to the subjugation of fire by the Australopithecines -- to great an audacity for him, not to mention the beginning of global warming. Prometheus, it would appear, the least of his heroes.

He quotes T.S. Eliot and reveals his vanquished soul, "...this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but with a whimper." If the world must end, why not quote Wallace Stevens, "....downward to darkness on extended wings."
