In OZ we have a Medicare Levy 1.5% and a Medicare Surcharge of an extra 1.0% if you earn too much . Ha Ha. I do not have private health insurance and neither does the rest of my family. My opinion is that it is not necessary because it does not get you much other than a Doctor of your choice and a private room in hospital.
Any emergency anyway and you will be treated in ED by the first available Surgeon according to level of priority. Post -op you could get a private room but be assured there are far less medical staff to look after you...maybe 1 resident to 200 plus patients.
Touch wood, i have not been in hospital since my appendix was removed just on 50 years ago and my family are similarly lucky. Further i work in the system so i know how to work it if need be via contacts.
Overall the system could be improved but I think it works quite well 95 +% of the time for most people but I do feel very sorry for those who are constantly seeking treatment for any affliction.
For any medical issues that I have had e.g. X-rays,Dr visits, checkups,blood tests etc there have had NO out of pocket expenses.
Wish you well with the new hip.
