There is a wonderful exchange of insults by leading political enemies in England.
With different names, it has been in circulation since the 1700s. Perhaps it
is apocryphal:
"You sir, will certainly die upon the gallows or of the pox."
The response:
"And that depends, sir, upon whether I embrace your principles of
your mistress."
Churchill and Lady Astor:
While dining, Churchill had consumed too much drink and was annoying Lady
Astor. In 1919, she was the first woman to win a seat in the House of Commons.
She was also notorious for her difficult nature.
"Winston, if you were my husband, I would put poison in your coffee."
Without missing a beat:
"Nancy, if you were my wife, I'd drink it."
And now there is Trey Goudy, a former prosecutor and a Republican Congressman.
Last week he dismissed the idea of impeaching President Obama for violating
the constitution with "Have you met Joe Biden?"
With Obama out, Vice President Biden would become president.
In this case, constant ridicule will likely be effective without the distress
of actual impeachment.
