"SCHEDULED ZINC MINE CLOSURES TO DRIVE RISING ZINC PRICES
According to Minmetals, output from Century Zinc Mine in Australia, the world's second largest zinc mine, dropped by 11% Y/Y to 122,015 T of contained metal in Q3/11.
The mine, which is expected to roughly maintain production levels until it runs out of ore in about four years, re-corded nine-month output of 363,276 T of contained metal, down 3 % Y/Y. The Century mine, developed in the 1990s, is running out of reserves.
In 2010, Century yielded just over 500,000 T of zinc in concentrate, making it the second-largest zinc mine behind Teck Resources Red Dog mine in Alaska.
Comment: Along with Century, the large zinc mines of Lisheen, Brunswick, Scorpion, Iscaycruz and Cerro De Pasco are scheduled for closure over the next few years. The closure of these mines, along with the declining production at a number of smaller mines, and limited new zinc production are setting the stage for a rise in zinc prices."
