Dear Subscriber,
Ecuador
On Friday, May 22 the Ministries of Mines and Environment jointly
issued an Instructivo that is essentially the "green light" for
companies to re-start exploration and mining projects. The
departmental instrument sets out the framework for resumption of
activities, subject to the Ministry of Environment's approval of
previously submitted environmental studies and environmental management
plans, not unlike other jurisdictions which require management plans
and/or environmental assessments before permitting exploration work.
We do not expect the environmental review to be a lengthy process since
the status of the properties has not changed during the moratorium and
Cornerstone had previously submitted the required environmental studies
on most of its concessions. In fact, the Ministry of Environment had
approved the Shyri drilling program for the Gama prospect in April,
2008, just before the Mining Mandate. The Instructivo applies to all
Cornerstone properties, regardless of the stage of exploration.
With the government making these important steps to expedite
recommencement of activities, Cornerstone and Newmont are planning to
recommence the Macar regional exploration program within the nearly
1830 km2 area of interest (AOI). Reconnaissance style exploration can
proceed without further environmental permitting; however, exploration
on the three concessions included in the Macar alliance still awaits
approval of previously submitted environmental management plans. In
past surveys, Cornerstone geologists have collected at least 49 rock
samples grading between 1.0 and 5.0 g Au/t and 17 samples grading
between 5.0 and 100.0 g Au/t from various sites in the AOI.
Early stage work has been equally as successful in demonstrating
surface gold mineralization on our 100%-owned Bella Maria, Monterrey
and Caa Brava properties. Last but not least, the flagship Shyri
property has three significant gold prospects (Gama, Vetas Grandes and
Caaribamba), each with defined drill targets and potential for large
deposits. These properties also await approval of their respective
environmental management plans in advance of re-starting field
activities.
We've also been working to strengthen our future growth in Ecuador.
We're very pleased to have Mr. Brooke Macdonald, a Miami-based lawyer
with extensive experience in mining and exploration deals in Latin
America, join our board of directors. Mr. Macdonald practiced law in
South America for a number of years and is fluent in Spanish. He was
also country manager for Placer Dome in Venezuela during their work on
the Las Cristinas gold project. His knowledge and expertise will be a
valuable resource for advancing our efforts in Ecuador. We have been
actively courting a number of companies with a view to attracting a new
partner to one or more of our gold properties. We've signed a number
of confidentiality agreements and are organizing site visits for
interested companies. As noted by a recent country report by Kroll,
political risk, although high in Ecuador, is improving with the return
to power of Rafael Correa in April's national election. The
expectation is that he will encourage foreign investment while
continuing to promote his pro-responsible mining policy. We believe
that aggressive companies are taking notice of the improving conditions
in Ecuador and will try to get in early to acquire the best properties.
To our patient and persevering shareholders our sincere thanks for your
continued support.
Little Deer Copper
Cornerstone and partner Thundermin continue with the third phase of
drilling on the Little Deer property in northwestern Newfoundland.
Four holes have been completed with drilling expected to proceed until
mid-year at which time the partners will have a NI43-101 compliant
mineral resource estimate completed by Micon International, an
independent consulting firm. The estimate of tonnes and grade will be
the first such study carried out on the Little Deer deposit. It is
confirmation that there are still valuable resources to be found in
this once productive copper district.
Drilling continues to hit very encouraging mineralization. Recently
LD-09-20 intersected 2.5% Cu over 12.0 m (core length), including 6.0%
Cu over 3.8 m, while LD-09-21 intersected 2.1% Cu over 6.3 m. Both
intercepts are within the volume of material to be evaluated by Micon's
resource study.
Uranium
Spot prices have shown an upward trend from the recent bottom with
producers such as Cameco and Denison showing similar positive movements
in share prices. Cornerstone holds three properties with excellent
potential for uranium, two in Labrador and one in northern New
Brunswick, for which we are seeking joint venture partners.
The Labrador Trough property, a 50:50 joint venture with Altius
Minerals, covers a vast, under-explored area of western Labrador.
Cornerstone and Altius completed an 11,300 line km airborne radiometric
and magnetic survey last summer and undertook a program of surface
sampling and prospecting. This initial program located anomalous
radioactivity in previously unexplored areas. The airborne survey
identified some 40 areas of anomalous radioactivity which will be
prioritized for ground checking.
The Aillik property in Labrador's Central Mineral Belt lies on strike
with Aurora's Michelin deposit and Otter Lake prospect. A 2007
airborne radiometric survey over the 162-claim property confirmed the
presence of a structural corridor similar to mineralized shear zones to
the west. The property is not affected by the 3-year moratorium on
uranium mining on Labrador Inuit Lands.
The Chaleur property in northern New Brunswick covers a large land
position (234 km2) which is prospective for volcanic-associated uranium
deposits. The 2008 airborne radiometric and magnetic survey identified
fifteen (15) targets for ground follow-up, several of which are
associated with anomalous uranium in stream sediments. As well, a brief
prospecting program discovered two new areas of uranium mineralization,
with float samples assaying up to 427 ppm U in one area and 275 ppm U
in the other. For comparison, these are equivalent to ore grade
material in the famous Rossing mine, Namibia. The property is not
impacted by recent provincial restrictions on prospecting for uranium
within private lands and designated watersheds.
Best regards.
