>A Plea for Civility - Jesse - Le Café Américain
Wow.

Ever notice back in school how the bullies rarely went after each other? Generally speaking people don't change once they reach the age of majority, but rather they get more-so. The only thing that oft changes is the tools used to beat down the non-bullies.

Those who were bullied tend to continue to be bullied. A few become politicians, elected or by association, so they can bully those they believe to be bullies. Some find a pulpit and work others into a frenzy. And a relatively rare number leave the herd and go it alone as much as possible.

Commentary is just opinion. Often it includes data that the commenter believes will support their thesis. Freedoms of speech and press exist to provide an outlet before the commenter blows a gasket and completes the transition to berserk.

I would contend that most folks get real edgy when the commentary starts tinkering with property rights, real or imagined. Classic examples are tax rates and gun control. The US Constitution was written to protect "Property Rights" and delineate governmental duties.

Now kiddies, here is reality. Reality ain't fair. Never was and no amount of belly-aching, legislation or "can't we all just get along" nonsense is gonna change it.
Either you drive the bus or you move to the rear. Wisdom is knowing when to do each.

When you are in the power position, you can afford to be civil. When you aren't in power, you make a passionate plea for a return to civility that never was.

The worse are those NOT in the power position who attempt to use passive-aggressive tactics to shame others into conforming with the herd.

I'm of the opinion that you are right about the current hysteria as well as the two major elements to this current wave. However, the "can't we all just get along" crowd fails to grasp reality. Emotions have served our specie well. Emotional responses by your ancestors, flight or fight, made it possible for you to tender this commentary. The third response, fright, use to be the mechanism that selectively culled the herd. Now under governmental protection, they form political action committees and get elected to office.

Your passive-aggressive plea to return to civility is duly noted. But bubba, it just ain't gonna happen without a sound money policy and a world-wide "keep your nose out of other folk's business" mandate. Passive-aggression is bullying.

Clean your own house. Otherwise ...
Sooner or later, the bully is always met by a bunch of viking berserkers wielding battle axes. The problem then becomes destruction of infrastructure and collateral damage to non-combatants. Both of these are unacceptable.

Lastly, never confuse bluntness in speech with lack of compassion.
Some famous person stated, "Diplomacy is to do and say the nastiest thing(s) in the nicest way."

The problem is NOT lack of civility, but rather the abundance of ignorance. Ever notice what the root word is? This infers choice.

A knowledgeable electorate does not make for many long political careers.
