Think of Linus and his blanket in the "Charley Brown" comics. He can twist it up and snap a buzzard out of the air. He experiences almost complete panic when it is taken away to be washed. It is his security blanket. Tattered means nothing, dragged through the dirt just give it character and ridicule just draws a smile from Linus. He knows security equates to personal power.

Perhaps you have never heard of a time when folks carried British Sovereigns when going abroad as their "get out of jail" card?
