>Prepare for War: Pentagon Crafts "Limited Strike Plans" for Syria; U.S. Forces Ready to Act With "Wi - Mish - Global Economic Analysis
Sorry Mish, I'm going with Edward Luttwak on this one. You might wanna read his book, "Coup d'Etat".

Were I setting policy for the US, this would be my Middle Eastern policy:
"By tying down Mr. Assad’s army and its Iranian and Hezbollah allies in a war against Al Qaeda-aligned extremist fighters, four of Washington’s enemies will be engaged in war among themselves and prevented from attacking Americans or America’s allies."

Affairs in Egypt are fitting in quit nicely. A military coup that isn't really military but has the support of the military sort of. The threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood rewriting the Egyptian Constitution has been neutralized but not eliminated.
Stay tuned for the next exciting episode.

In the mean time, as part of a policy realignment I would shift towards democratic ideals and negotiations with all stakeholders. Effectively move towards a more neutral position world-wide. Downsize the military while still retaining global projection capability. Back-fill when needed with Reserves and National Guard.
But first, last and always, keep the Middle East, sans Israel, fighting amongst themselves. They are trying to eliminate the threats posed to the West their own selves.

US public opinion can swing wildly from pacifist to hawk on a dime. That is why allegations (of chemical attacks) can be so effective in swinging public opinion. Ergo, we can easily explain on again-off again material support for the insurgency. After all, the Assad government is the legitimate and recognized government of Syria. It is really all about one party wants a pipeline and the other doesn't. Guess who we are.

Oh and lastly, the Pentagon always maintains contingency plans for intervention or retaliation anywhere in the world and updates them continually. That has been said over and over again, but needs to be said again because appears nobody seems to be listening.
