Definitely a possibility. Don't overlook the effects of a seemingly unrelated event: blocking of the Suez Canal. No doubt that the Egyptian military understands this threat, but can they prevent it?
This would have a adverse effect on Europe and could be the coup de grace to the Hollande administration for his eagerness to attack Syria. Even a 25% rise in crude oil would cause severe economic disruptions. Now enter the Gazprom pipelines already in existence. Winter is coming on, do Europeans know where their fuel deliveries are coming from? Are you willing to bet on it?
Don't piss off bankers, fuel delivery aka utility folks, or farmers. And now with just-in-time delivery of every consumer good, the transportation system is highly vulnerable to fuel delivery disruptions and sudden loss of fuel cost containment.

If you lack the capacity to self-finance, you are a dependent. If you lack the ability to produce your own fuel, you are a dependent. If you can't grow your own food, you are a dependent. Dependents lack the ability to force others to support them. A grossly over-manned and technologically superior military can kill off those who support them, but they can't finance, produce or grow anything. The military is a dependent.

When resources quit moving across borders, the armies begin. There is no such thing as the surgical use of military forces.

The US is about to experience Ragnarok. We can fight the future and see everything destroyed or we can accept the new paradigm and adapt. Adaptation will be difficult due to the idiocy of Joe Average believing in the silly notion of American Exceptionalism. The only thing exceptional about America is the level of gross ignorance by a public who votes for people just like them: bullies, bozos and bitches. Likes like likes.
