>Unfulfilled Dreams: A Tension At the Heart of the Universe - Jesse - Jesse's Cafe
You're too late, I'm afraid. One is able to assess the 'accomplishments' of a great nation not only by the gifts and opportunities it has provided to humankind, but also by the amount of damage left in its historical wake. Without intending to sound presumptuous, I firmly believe that whenever the weak and vulnerable are exploited, attacked, murdered and reduced to the lowest levels of human misery by a 'superpower' nation in its pursuit of its way of life or its dreams, then it has failed and there is little possibility for redemption. Like other nations, empires and so-called 'rulers of the earth' which have come and gone before it, The United States of America is now beginning to reap for itself what it has sowed for others. A small example would be the Iraq embargo of the nineteen-nineties. It wasn't small for the Iraqi people, however. Hundreds of thousands of dead innocents, the most vulnerable human beings anywhere, children, women, the aged and infirm left to slowly wither into death by our cruel, constant and almost awe inspiring destructive policies leveled against a people already under the brutal regime of a monster. We then applied an awe inspiring bombing campaign against the poorest and most nutritionally deprived (starving) people on the planet when we initiated hostilities against the Afghan People. Right, dropping bombs on starving human beings. More dead and more destruction and whatever the rationale used by those who advocate this form of 'diplomacy', it will never suffice and now? Now our previous behavior has turned against us as it always does and we, ourselves, are slowly and sadly being exposed and affected by the effects of this legacy of misery and destruction. A great nation has a great responsibility. It should inspire rather than intimidate, create and construct rather than vilify and destroy. Humility, probity and respect should be its guiding principles, never fear, vengeance or scorn. Our actions since 9/11 have spoken much louder than our words; yet we, ourselves, are very reluctant to turn our gaze inward, upon our own hearts, our own motivations and upon what remains after we've acted. This aversion to our own behavior reveals a great and very deep contempt for life and when one contemplates the essence of this contempt, one is able to visualize its ultimate destination and it is a sight one is unable to hold with a steady gaze.

Début de l'article :"...So many of us in life start out building temples: temples of character, temples of justice, temples of peace. And so often we don’t finish them. Because life is like Schubert’s "Unfinished Symphony." At so many points we start, wetry, we set out to build our various temples. And I guess one of the great agonies of life is that we are constantly trying to finish that which isunfinishable... Lire la suite
