Kunstler is a touch dramatic at times, yes. His aim I believe is to shake us out of our slumber. I actually bought and read his 'Made by Hand' book. It's a plausible post apocalyptic view. I would rate it's liklihood of occurrence as low though. But no-one can know how far down the slippery slope the current mess will take us. Best be prepared for several stops along the way. Like McCarty's "The Road" no explanation for what caused the apocalypse is given. Could be a blow out along the New Madrid fault line. Could be nuclear war started by Pakistan, or Iran or (did you read Justice Litle's article on Saudi Arabia preparing for war). Might be some little middle eastern country with a surplus nuke or two from the USSR days that get's PO'd at out adventures in their country and lights them off here domestically.

If you're not preparing for anything from routine summer market doldrums to Kunstler's vision and everything in between, your portfolio of plans is probably not sufficiently diversified.
