Many thanks indeed for the scholarly information and insightful analysis. However, please note the U.S. entered the Philippines in 1898, not 1896. In that regard, what exactly did Conant mean when he was quoted by you as saying "go cold"? Or was that a misprint for gold? Even then the reference requires some explanation. Please extend your analysis a little to the Philippines, which was a significant player in this story, because much of the early silver in the Far East came from Mexican and Bolivian mines through the Manila Galleon trade. What is the connection with this whole silver & opium story of the Philippine silver pesos being reduced in weight and fineness after 1906? On Conant's recommendations, the U.S. regime had introduced silver pesos (and other coinage) beginning in 1903. Thanks again!
