Keep The Gold Line Moving
Fire River Drills as it Mills in AlaskaBy Greg Klein
As Americans celebrated the Fourth of July last week, some Americans and Canadians celebrated the rebirth of an Alaska mine. This was the day that Fire River Gold Corp cranked up the mill at its recently reopened Nixon Fork Mine in the Tintina Gold Belt. "We started up the mill on July 4 and ran on waste for two days," President/COO Richard Goodwin reports. "Then we started running it on low grade, and we'll be switching to full-on ore."
Goodwin continues, "We do have a stockpile ahead of the mill of about 3,000 tonnes, and that's what we'll be chewing through while we continue to ramp up the mine to full production." That's slated for October, when both mine and mill will be operating near capacity. The company plans its first shipment of concentrate this month and will pour its first dore bar in August...

The Beverly Hills of West Africa
Pelangio is Surrounded by Gold Coast GiantsBy Ted Niles
Brendan Cahill can't think of a better place to be. "Ghana is kind of the Beverly Hills of gold exploration," declares the VP of Corporate Development for Pelangio Exploration. "It's all big players and stars out there." Among them: Kinross, AngloGold Ashanti, Newmont, Gold Fields and Golden Star. Cahill says, "Those guys are there because it's the best place in the world to work, and we're lucky to have over 500 square kilometres. The combination of potential for massive deposits and a really supportive government and a well-trained workforceI don't think there's a place in the world like it."
Of its three properties in the West African nationObuasi, Manfo and AkromaPelangio's Manfo property has received the lion's share of attention so far. Manfo comprises 100 square kilometres and is located on the Sefwi Greenstone Belt. Cahill refers to it as a "company-making property," and there might be something to that, given that Kinross's Chirano Mine is located a mere 14 kilometres to the southwest, and Newmont's Ahafo Mine is 50 kilometres to the north. Cahill remarks, "[Manfo] is one that people can invest in and be sure that there's something there..."

North of Two Million
North Country Gold Meets Nunavut's ChallengesBy Ted Niles
Brian Budd freely acknowledges that building a mine in Nunavut won't be easy. "Nunavut is very remote," says North Country Gold's VP of Corporate Development, "and the North is tough to do business in." But, he adds, "Look at Meadowbank; it's been done."
Budd is referring to Agnico-Eagle's Meadowbank Mine, located 180 kilometres southwest of North Country's Three Bluffs deposit. Meadowbank started commercial production in March 2010, and in 1Q 2011 produced 61,737 ounces of gold at its 8,500-tonne-per-day processing plant. "The territory is very mining friendly, and I think that they're open to bringing in more infrastructure," says Budd, noting that the Manitoba and Nunavut governments have made commitments towards the construction of an all-weather road connecting the province and territory. A recent cost-benefit analysis of the project indicated that the Nunavut economy could gain in the range of $400 million thereby...
