DENVER (AP) _ Whiting Petroleum Corp. (WLL) on Wednesday reported a loss of $98.7 million in its fourth quarter.

The Denver-based company said it had a loss of 48 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 43 cents per share.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 15 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 30 cents per share.

The oil and gas company posted revenue of $423.5 million in the period, also falling short of Street forecasts. Nine analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $470.4 million.

For the year, the company reported a loss of $2.22 billion, or $11.35 per share, swinging to a loss in the period. Revenue was reported as $2.05 billion.

In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, the company's shares hit $3.72. A year ago, they were trading at $36.56.
