Constellation Energy seeking applications for "Energy to Educate" Grant Program
Grant awards will fund student projects focused on energy innovation and technology
BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) today announced it is taking applications for its E2: Energy to Educate Grants program ("E2 Grants") which provide funding for projects that enhance student understanding of the science and technology needed to address energy issues. Grant awards will be up to $25,000 for projects involving students in grades six through 12 and up to $50,000 for projects at two and four-year colleges. Funds will be provided by the Constellation Energy Foundation.
The E2 Grants program targets projects that advance energy innovation and build on student knowledge and application of science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on demonstration. The projects must align with at least one of three focus areas: the basic science and engineering needed to address energy challenges; new energy technologies entering the marketplace; and the expanding role of information technology in how we efficiently manage and use energy. The application deadline is Oct. 1.
"The E2 Grants assist in preparing students to address one of their generation's greatest challenges making the transition to a more secure, efficient and low-emissions energy system to power both our buildings and vehicles," said Mayo A. Shattuck III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy. "Achieving this outcome is essential to the nation's economic success and to the health of the communities in which we live and work. The E2 Grant program furthers Constellation Energy's support for education and our efforts to build the energy architecture of the future through investments in cleaner, smarter and more integrated energy technologies."
Last year, Constellation Energy awarded 10 E2 grants totaling $350,000 to schools and nonprofit partners in communities where Constellation Energy does business. The grant awards reached more than 26,000 students nationwide and provided funding for a diverse array of projects including the construction of a cost-effective, energy efficient affordable home and a Clean Energy Challenge that brought together students from seven states.
To qualify for an E2 Grant, a project should be located in an area where Constellation Energy does business. Projects should be team-oriented and reach a minimum of 100 students. Both two- and four-year colleges and universities are eligible. Projects involving students in grades six through 12 must include a minimum of three partners, including at least one that is governed by a board of directors and designated a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Our clean energy portfolio includes more than 1,000 megawatts of renewable power generation owned or under contract. More than 90 percent of the total output of Constellation Energy's 12,000-megawatt generation fleet comes from near-zero or low-emission nuclear and natural gas plants, and from coal plants we have already retrofitted with state-of-the-art pollution control equipment.
BGE, our regulated utility in central Maryland, traces its roots back to the nation's first gas light utility and continues to innovate with plans to install more than 2 million advanced meters and meter devices in the spring of next this year as part of an ambitious smart grid program that gives customers new tools to actively manage their energy use.
