Natural gas meter-move-out project to get underway in New Carlisle
New Carlisle, Ohio - Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio (Vectren) is spending more than $220,000 this year to relocate approximately 110 of New Carlisle's indoor meters to outdoor locations next to customer homes. The New Carlisle project is one of several gas infrastructure improvements being made during Vectren's multi-year plan to modernize its gas infrastructure throughout Ohio. The work is set to get underway in the coming days as direct customer notification is in process.
A common practice of the utility industry was to install indoor gas meters because older-style meters were more stable in a temperature-controlled environment. Today's gas meters have the same accuracy rate whether installed outdoors or indoors. Locating the meters outdoors enables meter readings as well as maintenance and/or repair work to be completed without accessing the customer's property and reduces the immediate danger if a gas leak were to occur.
'One benefit of relocating gas meters to the outside of homes is accurate meter reading and billing. It also greatly diminishes inconveniences to customers who currently must grant access to meter readers,' said Colleen Ryan, president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio.
Premier Energy Services, a Vectren contractor, is performing the work, and those customers who are affected will receive a notification letter with information on how to contact Premier to schedule an appointment to have their meter moved. This project will likely continue until the end of October.
